>People make way too much out of words. The term holiday doesn’t degrade or dismiss any specific holiday. Likewise, the terms Christian or Islam or Zorostrian do nothing to negate the existence of one another. So why the fuss when the term holiday is used to include any and all holidays celebrated by a diverse community? Answer: fear. People who worry about the ficticious “war on Christmas” really have nothing to fear at all. They just need to settle back, practice “love thy neighbor” and watch the fruit of their religious choice create a tolerant, loving community of souls. Good luck Oklahoma! …Happy Wicca to all and to all a good night!
>I agree with you that Christianity's proclamation is love. In saying that, why not change the name to holiday? If it makes people feel more comfortable or accepted, than so be it.
On the other hand, if the "Holiday" parade consists of "Christmas" trees, Santa Claus, reindeer, mangers, and other items and themes that traditionally represent Christmas, is it not still a Christmas parade?
If it looks like a Christmas parade and sounds like a Christmas parade, it's still a Christmas parade even if we stop calling it that.
>I agree with Andrea. I'm not sure I understand the necessity of changing a Christmas parade's name when it is still a Christmas parade.
As for the hissy fit, I don't get that either.
>I suppose some parts of it are 'Christian' but many of them are non-religious oriented elements of Christmas that people of any faith can enjoy. It is a parade that exists primarily due to Christmas, obviously. And I think most people going to it know that. But there are non-religious elements (santa, reindeer, even christmas trees, aren't primarily religious) that allow many to enjoy the seasonal celebration without having to be Christian.
