>Ignorance of One's Misfortune is Clear Gain

>

The key thing to understand about misfortune is that once you recognize it, it becomes useless.  What I mean is you can’t move forward contemplating the misfortune.  You can recognize it, know that it has happened, but to actually take action you must focus elsewhere.  Focusing on the actual misfortune is focusing on history.

That doesn’t mean you don’t work to comprehend the ‘why’ behind the misfortune.  That is an evaluation to help your future.  You realize your misfortune stems from not having a compass in the woods for example, and thus you are lost.  If you are interested in getting out of the woods you must not think of the fact you don’t have a compass but maybe how you can make a new compass, or read the sun trail across the sky, or watch the shadows.

You must move forward.

So, maybe the key to enduring our own misfortune is to act as if we are someone else.  Nice thought but we truly only have to endure our own pain first hand.  Empathy and sympathy are the closest we can get to feeling what others feel.  That is why those traits are of great value in having others feel love from you.  Yes, it does increase our pain a bit, but the love and solace we give by being empathetic and sympathetic to others is well worth it.

>The Longer We Dwell

>

The key here is that if you have had a misfortune it obviously is in the past. If it is in the past then dwelling on it probably is not helping you prepare for the future very well.

Evaluating what led to the misfortune is important. But dwelling on the woe attached to it has to be put on the shelf in short order otherwise it starts to influence your current life and thus your future.
