Just thinking of the Fort Hood shooting yesterday and how horrendous the shock and emotion is for those connected to it, whether right in the middle of the shooting or family and friends.
No matter what the grief, don’t try to push people to ignore it, and don’t ignore it yourself. You don’t have to get rid of it, or hide it. Let it exist. Just sit with them, hold their hand. Grieve with them.

A bird fell in the brambles,
a place I could not get.
small and frail, not fully grown,
beyond the fence it set.
Wiggle dog brought it attention,
barking incessantly.
The mother and father dive bombing
To keep her away from tree.
This morning she still is there,
breathing shallow I see.
The parents squawking above us,
Wiggle dog fast against the tree.
She is bound to die I know,
It’s sad to contemplate.
Sadder for the parents
unable to change her fate.
The dog, she barks away,
at a bird on it’s last gasp.
Today she barked at something
just beyond her grasp.

How does the uninvited guest end up staying? By moving in while the
host is asleep. Why is the host asleep? Because she is tired. Why is the
host tired? Because she has spent herself chasing after the birds flying
overhead, shooing them away. Why does she feel she needs to shoo
them away? Because they make noise and poop all over her and her
home. What could she do to get rid of the birds and not be too tired?
She can go to the House of Need and helps someone there. The birds
will follow her and will get distracted while she is there, flying off to parts
unknown while she returns to her home free to slumber without fear.
