Sketchbook History Tour – 1973.
I have sketchbooks dating back to 1971. Each Sunday I will post a drawing, going through the years.
Sunbather at a Country Club, 1973 |
During the summer after I graduated from High School I got blown up in a boat explosion. My recuperation took place at my parent’s home in Virginia. I got a job life guarding at a local pool inside a country club. I used my off time to continue drawing. A frequent visitor to the pool allowed me to draw her sunbathing. Sunbathers are great models for artists of course since they sit still for long periods of time. She was no exception.

>Wow, what a powerful, life changing story. My bro was in an accident, and spent some time in a ICU burn unit (although he wasn't burned) and you are right- the stories, the bravery there are amazing.
>Sara, We were a Coney Island marina and I was gassing up our family's boat. The overflow went into the engine compartmentand the fumes were sparked by a faulty generator, blowing the hatch off the compartment.
I fell in on my back and was burned on 70% of my body, 25% was 3rd degree. I spent 7 weeks in Kings County Hospital in Brooklyn, New York recuperating.
Luckily I was 18 years old, very strong, very fit with a lot of support. I survived. Others in my ICU burn unit weren't so lucky even though not many were burned as badly as I was.
That injury and event has colored my life, almost 100%, in good ways. As a matter of fact I can't think of one negative thing to say about the experience from my personal point of view, in spite of the pain.
It was terribly hard for my family, and while I see it as as partly negative from that angle, it also was instrumental in some incredibly good things happening in my family as well.
>Hold tight here…you got blown up? YOu can leave us at that!!
