‘At First’ – A Short, Short Story
Was she the one being counseled or was she the counselor? I couldn’t tell at first.
Were the children hers, or the other woman’s, or maybe they belonged to the man, or all three. I couldn’t tell at first.
At first I thought she would sit still long enough for me to draw her.
At first she didn’t notice me.

Love this!
Thanks Place!
I love this Marty. Also, a double-sided napkin… looks a bit like a postcard 🙂
Thanks Agnes, it is like a postcard/note card, isn’t it!
I like this! It says a lot, while leaving it totally up to the reader! It reminds me of a story (probably apocryphal) of a contest Ernest Hemingway sprung on dinner guests – to write the shortest short story possible. On a napkin (!!!) he wrote the following and raised it in victory: “For sale. Baby shoes. Never worn.”
Dave, that’s a great story. I have heard that quoted before but didn’t know who wrote it. Hemingway was known for sparse prose so it makes sense he would have been the author.
